Margaret Waiyego Zollinger

“The project is about a visualization of the integration process so called acculturation. It contains the adaption of elements of a hitherto foreign culture by individuals and groups. The observation of the new cultural patterns and willingness to adopt them is important for process. The encounter and recording is prerequisite for the learning, a process of adopting dispositions and behaviors – the unseen objects. I inquire strangers about different preferences, values, facts and also allow space for coincidence. In its ambiguity, the word «values» reveals the allegorical character of my concept. In the form of numbers and figures, they dictate a form, its placement, the number of circling and even the color. Symbolically, the values stand for knowledge, norms, institutions, habits ecc. The central processes of acculturation come to light in the graphic realization of the values: internalization and imitation. The act of meticulous circling represents the learning process in terms of new values. The repetitive path reflects the efforts and the costs of the assumption. I am physically and mentally challenged to adhere to the values. The gained ease gained through integration is represented by the laser-generated topographies. What emerged is the assimilation of a hitherto unknown cultural entity: a topography of the invisible inner process of each adaptation within the interplay of culture and sculpture.”
