Process and Application.

The HUE+MAN Design Competition process consists of two rounds. In the first round, candidates can apply to participate in the competition with an existing piece of work. The project team will select up to twenty finalists who will then be allowed to participate in round two.

In the second round, finalists will create a piece of work that refers to a chosen theme, found below. This theme is the same for every finalist.

Round 1: Apply With What You Have

Candidates who meet the requirements may apply starting in March 2021. Your application must contain:

  • Your name(s), e-mail address(es), and the country where you currently reside

  • Description of your motivation

  • Description and pictures/videos/access links to at least two pieces of work

The project team will evaluate the applications according to the evaluation criteria.

Round 2: Create Something New

Only finalists that were selected in round one will continue to round two beginning in May 2021. Finalists will create a piece or a series of work on the chosen theme. After completion, they will submit their project via pictures, videos or access links. A discerning jury will evaluate all applications according to the defined evaluation criteria. All finalists will receive detailed feedback.

Round Two Theme

In the second round of the competition, the selected finalists have to create a new piece of work reflecting on the theme presented here. The theme we want to explore together with our finalists is called “Culture Sculptures.”

Culture Sculptures: From Cultures to Sculptures

There are many factors that determine who we become as individuals and that shape contemporary culture. Our identities are built on nuanced personal experiences from everyday life: People, circumstances, events, beliefs, traditions and values are some of them. This everyday life is filled with different sculptured objects that surround us. Those objects enable structure and culture. The interrelationship between culture and sculpture is what interests us. How did this interrelationship between culture and sculpture impact you?

We would like you to explore and to reimagine the role of the object in contemporary culture. The competition is intended to be inspiring, rousing and challenging.

Our Understanding of culture and sculpture

We have a broad understanding of culture and sculpture.

How do we understand culture?
Culture is an umbrella term which encompasses the social behavior and norms found in human societies, as well as the knowledge, beliefs, arts, laws, customs, capabilities, and habits of the individuals in these groups.

How do we understand sculpture?

Sculpture is the branch of the visual arts that operates in three dimensions. It is one of the plastic arts. Durable sculptural processes originally used carving and modelling, in stone, metal, ceramics, wood and other materials but, since Modernism, there has been an almost complete freedom of materials and process, including sound, light and more.

Competition Task

Explore design principals, creative signatures and/or other esthetic elements in a creative process.

  • This process leads you to the creation of a material or virtual object or study

  • The object or study has three dimensional or other sculptural qualities and reflects contemporary culture

  • Think about how you would present this creation to the public (for example at an exhibition)
