“My creative journey is fifty years in the making. Like most creative kids, I spent many days drawing and 'inventing'. As I grew older, 'drawing within the lines' brought academic success and eventually admission to Stanford University. Creativity took a backseat however while I finished my bachelor of science degree and thoughts of medicine. The discovery of art history classes as well as a product design course run by IDEO co-founder, David Kelley kept my creative fire alive. I eventually landed at IDEO, but in the role of researcher not designer. Two things were revealed to me during this experience: 1) Within months, I knew I wanted to build products and experiences and 2) none of the designers looked like me. Fortunately, the onset of the Web became a great equalizer of sorts, giving me the opportunity to become a designer without having formally trained as one. I formed my own consultancy and offered my digital design services (all self-taught) to many leading non-profit organizations. A fifteen year consulting career culminated in a position at UNICEF where I expanded my practice to industrial design. As amazing as this experience was, I found myself waking-up in the night with ideas on things I wanted to build. Upon completion of my contract, I invested much of life-savings into the launch of my own studio with the goal of creating products under my own name. I'm hoping the HUE+MAN Design Competition will catalyze this fifty year success story.”
