“As a designer from an immigrant family, knowing my root and maintaining my heritage often gave me the power to overcome discrimination and difficulties. I am proud of the fact that my ancestors in Korea fought hard and protected their language and culture from Japanese invasion during the colonization era, and it reminds me of the appreciation of other cultures as well. The influence of colonialism still exists, making inequalities between nations even bigger. Nations with more advanced technologies and access to political powers still exploit other nations by interfering their politics and encouraging corruptions, resulting in even bigger obstructions for them to develop. In the past years, we all have witnessed how some nations had to abandon majority of their population without medical support amid this global crisis. Some nations attacked the other, while they were struggling from political recoveries. Even within a nation, conflicts between races and backgrounds are often used as a political tool that results in hatred and violence. Can this tragedy end someday? I strongly believe that promoting diverse cultural appreciation will help people to understand more about others’ history and struggles, and give pressure to politics to act on injustice among developed nations..”
